Mitchell Robinson leaving the Knicks

https://nypost.com/2026/07/01/sports/mitchell-robinson-leaves-knicks-for-celtics-in-nba-free-agency/

Mitchell Robinson is not returning to the Knicks, as he intends to sign a three-year, $47.4 million contract with the Celtics in free agency,

Previously the longest-tenured Knicks player, it puts an end to his eight-year tenure with the team, which ended in a title.

A second-round pick, Robinson – now 28 – developed from a raw shot-blocker into a key bench piece and one of the best rebounders in the NBA.

The Knicks already secured two of their top three free agents in Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet to multiyear deals along with Mohamed Diawara. Those moves left the Knicks roughly $9 million under the second apron and still needing to sign three players heading into Tuesday’s start of free agency.

Teams were officially allowed to begin negotiating with all other free agents (they can negotiate with their own free agents immediately after the Finals) on Tuesday, though no deals can be made official until July 6.

  • Parlay PrinceKnicks bench is weak AF. Brunson misses 4 weeks and they don't make the playoffs. Spurs can make the playoffs if Wemby misses 4 weeks.

  • AnthonyKnicks got Drummond for 1yr/$3.9M. That's a huge bargain compared to the Celtics who overpaid for Mitch Robinson.

  • MoneyLineKnicks signed Andre Drummond to replace Robinson. Pretty much the same player but cheaper.

  • AnthonyEvery team had to make tough choices. Oubre is gone from the Sixers. Vooch is gone from Chicago. Utah traded expensive Kessler traded to the Lakers. Detroit couldn't keep Tobias Harris. Celtics dumped bad contract Jaylen Brown their former NBA FINALS MVP.

  • MoneyLineCeltics' probable opening night staring lineup: PG Pritchard, SG White, SF Tatum, PF Queta, C Robinson. 6th Man: Hauser Not good enough IMO. NOT better than the Knicks, Heat, Sixers, Cavaliers, Wizards, Hawks. Maybe 7th seed though and early playoff exit. Boatload of draft picks next season thanks to the Sixers-Jaylen Brown trade.

  • Pied PiperYou have 3 tiers of players in the NBA: the $25M+/year tier; the $10M-$24M tier and the $3M-$9M tier. He elevated into that 2nd tier at age 28. Good for him. The Knicks wanted him back but in that 3rd tier. The Knicks have their starting 5 in that top tier already.

  • FAFOA crucial piece to a championship as a backup yes, but not worth $15M/year. He plays 50 games at most and his best years are most certainly behind him.
